What dressmakers create
From everyday wear to showstopping occasion pieces:
The bespoke process
Consultation
Discuss your vision, look at styles, consider fabrics, and get initial measurements. This is where your garment starts to take shape.
Pattern & Toile
A custom pattern is created. Then a toile (test garment in plain fabric) lets you try the shape before cutting the real fabric.
Construction
Your garment is made in your chosen fabric, with careful attention to every detail. Quality construction takes time.
Final Fitting
Last adjustments ensure everything is perfect. You leave with a garment that fits like nothing else in your wardrobe.
What to expect on cost
Bespoke is an investment. Here are typical ranges:
Skirts, blouses, simple dresses in standard fabrics.
Cocktail dresses, special occasion pieces, coats & jackets.
Elaborate gowns, beading, complex construction, luxury fabrics.
Fabric is often extra. Allow 6-12 weeks for most bespoke projects.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the bespoke dressmaking process work?
It starts with a consultation where you discuss what you want, look at styles, and consider fabrics. Measurements are taken (often 20-30 different measurements for a dress). A pattern is created specifically for your body. Then comes a toile fitting, which is a mock-up in plain fabric to check the fit before cutting your actual fabric. After adjustments, the garment is made in your chosen fabric, with one or two more fittings to fine-tune the fit before completion.
How long does it take to make a custom dress?
Allow 6-12 weeks for most bespoke garments. A simple dress might be faster; an elaborate evening gown with beading could take longer. Rush jobs are sometimes possible but usually cost more and may limit fabric choices. Wedding-related garments should be started at least 4-6 months before the date to allow time for fittings without stress.
Can I bring my own design or picture?
Absolutely. Many clients bring photos from magazines, Pinterest boards, or sketches of what they have in mind. A skilled dressmaker can interpret these references and advise what will work best for your body shape and budget. Sometimes modifications are suggested to improve the design or make it more practical to construct.
What's a toile fitting?
A toile (also called a muslin in the US) is a test version of the garment made in inexpensive fabric, usually calico. It lets you try on the basic shape and fit before any expensive fabric is cut. Adjustments are marked on the toile, then transferred to the pattern. This step is crucial for ensuring the final garment fits perfectly.
Do I need to provide the fabric?
It depends on the dressmaker. Some prefer to source fabric themselves to ensure quality and workability. Others are happy for clients to bring their own. If you're providing fabric, buy more than the estimated amount (the dressmaker will advise how much) and check whether it needs pre-washing or special handling.
